Move over, 4K: 8K is television's new sweet spot

8K is already on the way in the next four years, says IHS.

IHS has estimated a rapidly expanding market for 8K screens over the next 4 years

4K or similar UHD resolution TVs and monitors are a growing portion of the overall market in 2015. While still not the standard, it looks poised to become the norm shortly. But what does come next?

IHS has released a report forecasting that 8K is already on the way in the next four years. Despite the fact that 8K TVs are only expected to ship 2,700 units in 2015, the company has forecast shipments of 911,000 in 2019. The largest market for such TVs outside of China are expected to be in North America, Western Europe and Japan.

According to the forecast, the vast majority of 8K TVs will be large-screen, specifically 65in. Meanwhile, about 80 percent of all 8K TVs will be 65in by 2019. Part of the reason for this is that new LCD fabs in China are predicted to become operational in the next three years, which means capacity will increase significantly. In addition, consumer preference for large screen TVs will be higher. Consumer preference for screen size has increased by about 1 inch per year since 2005.
