Smart, self-driving vehicles may be all the rage in manufacturers' test labs, but another kind of "smart" car is hitting the road soon.
Germany-based Smart Automobile, a division of Daimler AG, this week introduced the redesigned ForTwo and ForFour vehicles, expected to launch in Europe this winter.
"The new Smart ForTwo and ForFour adopt the proven concept while offering more of just about everything—more space, more color, more equipment … and even more fun in the city!" Smart CEO Annette Winkler said in a statement. "Our idea based on a total rethink of urban mobility has won through."

Hoping to tap into the small, urban car market, Smart unveiled its next-generation, 105-inch two-seater alongside the 137-inch ForFour microcar (pictured), which is actually a revival of a model Smart scrapped in 2006, according to the Wall Street Journal.

Equipped with three-cylinder engines and the option of a five-speed manual transmission or twinamic automatic dual clutch, the new vehicles will be priced between €11,000 ($14,880) and €11,600 ($15,690).
Despite their improved safety, extreme agility, and urban appeal, the new cars don't guarantee a win for the Smart division, which has never made a profit, theJournal said.
During this week's unveiling in Germany, Daimler CEO Dieter Zetsche told the newspaper that his company sold 48,816 two-door Smart vehicles in the first half of 2014—down 10 percent from a year ago.
Perhaps advanced assistance systems, previously reserved for higher-class cars, can attract more buyers. Tools like Crosswind Assist, forward collision warning, and Lane Keeping Assist are all optional in the upcoming vehicles for added safety protections.
Plus, long-time Smart collaborator Harman announced that its customized JBL sound system will debut in the ForTwo and ForFour cars in November.
