“Ransomware” o el arte de delinquir a través del Internet*


“Ransomware” se denomina, en el argot computacional, al conjunto de instrumentos de programación que emplean los delincuentes cibernéticos para “secuestrar” la información de usuarios inocentes, a partir de ese momento convertidos en víctimas, para despojarles de la información almacenada en sus computadoras y extorsionarles que para devolverles el acceso a ella, deberán pagarle un “rescate”.

En otras palabras, “secuestran” el contenido de la computadora de la víctima inocente a través de la introducción de un codificador que solamente permite acceder a la información utilizando una “clave de acceso”. La herramienta del delito, introducida subrepticiamente en la computadora de la victima a través del Internet, se encarga de efectuar toda la codificación sin la menor sospecha por parte de la víctima y se presenta una vez que todo está codificado, para informarle a la victima que deberá pagar una suma determinada antes de una fecha dada o de lo contrario perderá para siempre el acceso a sus contenidos, pues aunque los contenidos siguen estando en su computadora, no puede usarlos ya que han sido codificados.

Hay muchas maneras o variantes de este delito. Una es disfrazados de “agentes de la Ley” informando a la victima que posee violaciones del derecho de propiedad intelectual al tener materiales “pirateados” por lo que debe pagar esa “multa” para continuar usando su computadora normalmente. Este truco está acompañado de “convincentes” logos y sellos “oficiales” para impactar a la víctima y asustarla.

Otras variantes implican el descarado “secuestro” de la información con la simple amenaza de perderla si no pagan. Muchas víctimas se desesperan ante el impacto que les causa en sus vidas y/o negocios la pérdida de la información, olvidando el principio elemental que no es ético ni responsable permitir que los delincuentes se salgan con la suya ya que eso simplemente les envalentonará para seguir delinquiendo. Lo más triste es que en muchos de los casos, los que pagan jamás reciben la “llave” que les permite volver a usar sus datos.  La gran disyuntiva es que encontrar una “llave” es un proceso que puede durar años, que no hay manera de “romper” una clave con la fuerza bruta…

El consejo universal de los expertos es nunca tratar con los delincuentes y concentrarse en encontrar y eliminar el “malware” que generalmente es un “caballo de Troya” responsable físicamente por el secuestro. Hay un par de  sitios en la web que se pueden visitar directamente:


Existe la alternativa adicional de correr una “búsqueda” que nos va a conducir a muchas alternativas de expertos en el tema.

Este es un episodio muy complicado de superar. La lógica es evitarlo.

Hay muchas maneras de evitar la contaminación, siendo una de las principales, el sentido común. No aceptar la entrada de elementos desconocidos al sistema; tener la conciencia cuando se instalan ficheros o programas de no “aceptar” ofrecimientos que no nos interesan o no conocemos; cuando se trata de  “attachments” en los correos electrónicos tener mucho cuidado de no aceptar aquellos que contengan elementos ejecutables (*.exe, *.com, *.bin) o que simplemente no sepamos de qué se trata. Estos elementos muchas veces vienen disfrazados de fotos, documentos, etc.,  ocultando su verdadera identidad.

La segunda línea de defensa: Hay que tener instalado software especializado en la detección y limpieza de este tipo de malware, llamados anti-malware. Y tenerlos actualizados (requieren actualizar su arsenal de herramientas periódicamente con las definiciones de los malware que van conociéndose) lo que requiere que al menos una vez a la semana hagamos el update de ellos y los hagamos correr, descontaminando a nuestro sistema con la suficiente antelación a que se presente el desastre. Siempre es mejor pecar por exceso. Es decir, instalar más de uno, ya que a veces lo que se escapa a uno se encuentra por otro.

En tercer lugar, pero no en último lugar: se requiere tener una herramienta de sobrevivencia: lo que se denomina un backup de lo que tenemos. Muchas personas adoptan una posición defensiva, de no saber y no querer saber, de dejarle este tema a otros. Pero si tienen computadoras no pueden rehusar saber y aprender lo indispensable para sobrevivir a lo que ya es casi diario. Cuando compramos un backup que es en la forma de un disco duro externo, que adicionamos a nuestra PC para que se almacene lo que es crítico para recuperarnos de un desastre, es imprescindible que nos cercioremos que en se guarden de forma segura los files de trabajo (documentos, hojas de cálculo, presentaciones, datos de contabilidad, estadísticas, en fin, lo que es resultado de los programas y no los programas mismos, los cuales generalmente podemos re-instalar en caso de necesidad, pero no podemos re-instalar lo que hemos obtenido con ellos por espacio de años o meses de trabajo.

Y recuerde que si usted tiene instalado permanentemente su backup enganchado a su PC es posible que también se lo contaminen, por lo que muchos expertos aconsejan que el backup solo sea enganchado para ejecutarlo (una vez al día, a la semana, o cuando se determine) pero que el resto del tiempo el backup permanezca protegido y aislado para asegurar su legitimidad.

How To Evaluate Tablets Based Upon Their OS And Software


One of the main reasons that tablets are so popular is that they are extremely portable and easy to use. Much of this stems from the software interfaces that are designed for the use of the touchscreen of the tablets. The experience is quite different from a traditional PC operating system that relies on a keyboard and mouse. Each tablet will have slightly different feel to them in terms of use because of their software. Because of this, the software for the tablet should be a key factor in deciding which tablet you might want to purchase.

Operating Systems

The biggest factor in the experience for a tablet PC is going to be the operating system. It is the basis for the whole experience including the interface gestures, application support and even what features a device can actually support. In particular, selecting a tablet with a specific operating system will essentially tie you to that platform just as if you selected a Windows or Mac based PC but even that is more flexible than the tablets are currently.
There are currently three major operating systems that are available now for tablet PCs. Each of them has their own strength and weaknesses. Below, I will touch on each of them and why you may want to choose or avoid them.
Apple iOS - Many people will say that the iPad is a glorified iPod Touch or iPhone. In some ways they are right. The operating system is not very different between the iPad and the company's phone and media players and that is by design. This has the advantage of making it one of the easiest of the tablets to pick up and use. Apple has done a superb job of creating a minimalist interface that is quick and easy to use. Since it has been on the market the longest, it also has the greatest number of applications available for it on the market. The downside is that you are locked into Apple's limited functionality. This includes limited multitasking and the ability to only load Apple approved applications unless you jailbreak your device which has other complications.
Google Android - Google's operating system is probably the most complex of the options currently available. This has to do with the fragmentation of the operating system between the 2.x versions designed for smartphones and early tablets along with the 3.x version that is specific to tablet devices. The company's new unified 4.x version does correct many of these issues but some devices are still shipping with older versions. The greatest advantage that Android has is its openness. The downside is that the openness leads to security issues and interfaces that are not as standardized as some of the other operating systems. Android is also the basis for many other tablet companies devices such as the Amazon Kindle Fire HDXand the Barnes and Noble Nook but they are heavily modified such that they aren't as open as the standard Android versions. Many tablet manufacturer's also put skins which are a modified version of the user interface on their devices which means that even two tablets running the same version of Android may look and feel very different.
Microsoft Windows 8/RT - Microsoft Windows 8 is the company's new all encompassing computing operating system for tablets, laptops and desktop. The release is a bit more complicated though as there will be two versions, one for traditional x86 that uses the standard OS and a special Windows RT for the more common ARM based tablet hardware. The ARM version of the OS will have more restrictions on it which may limit the functionality for many buyers. The advantage here is that the user experience is essentially the same between one's desktop and tablet. The downside is that it is very different from previous versions of Windows which makes it a bit more difficult for some to use. With the release of Windows 8.1, Microsoft hopes to correct some of the more confusing user interface issues.
There are a couple of other operating systems out there in the market but the products that they were based on are no longer available and as such they won't really be encountered. This includes the BlackBerry Tablet OS that was on the BlackBerry PlayBook and WebOS from the doomed HP TouchPad. Both may resurface in the future if BlackBerry every releases an updated tablet product and LG now owns the WebOS software rights.

Application Stores

Application stores are the primary means that consumers will be acquiring and even installing software onto their tablet PCs. This is something that should be considered before buying a tablet as the experience and software available to each has very specific implications to the tablet PC. In most cases, the application store for the device will be operated by the company that developed the operating system for the tablet. There are a couple of exceptions to this.
Those using an Android based device will have the choice of multiple application stores to use. There is the standard Google Play that is operated by Google. In addition to this, there are various application stores run by third parties including Amazon's Appstore for Android which also doubles as the store for the Amazon Kindle, various stores run by the hardware manufacturers of the devices and even third party stores. This is great for opening up competition in terms of pricing for applications but it can make it more difficult to find applications and raises security concerns if you are not sure who is actually managing the store you buy an app from.
Even Microsoft has gotten into the application store business with its Microsoft Store. Note that with the new Windows 8 operating system, only applications that fully support the new Modern UI can be used on both traditional PCs and the Windows RT based tablets.
Owners of the BlackBerry PlayBook now can run some Android applications with the version 2.0 software. This means that in addition to BlackBerry App World, the tablet will also be able to access select Android applications that have been certified. The applications have to be repackaged by the developer. It is possible to sideload applications as well but it isn't an easy process.
In each of the different operating systems, there will be links to the default application store for each of the devices.

Application Availability And Quality

With the development of the application stores, it has become extremely easy for developers to release their applications to the various tablet devices. This means that there are a large number of applications available on each of the different platforms. Now some platforms such as the Apple iOS store have a larger number because the tablet has been on the market longer while others are just getting off the ground. Because of this, Apple's iPad tends to get various applications first and some of them have not migrated to the other platforms yet.
The downside to the large number of applications available and the ease with which they can be published is the quality of the apps. For example, there are thousands of list applications available for the iPad. This makes sorting through the available options for which is the best quite difficult. Ratings and reviews on the stores and third party sites can help ease this but frankly it can be a major pain to find even basic applications on Apple's store. Thus, a device with fewer applications can also have some advantages.
The other problem is the quality of many of these applications. Pricing of applications can be very inexpensive or even free. Of course, just because something is free or even $.99 doesn't mean that it is well made. Many of the programs have very limited features or are not updated to correct problems with new operating system updates. Many of the free applications are also ad driven that will have various levels of ads displayed to the user while they are in the applications. Finally, many of the free apps may offer extremely limited use of the features unless your pay to unlock them.

Parental Controls

Another thing that may be an issue for families that might share a tablet is parental controls. This is a feature that is finally starting to get some more support from the major companies. There are several level of parental controls. The first is profiles. A profile allows a tablet to be setup so that when someone uses the device, they are only allowed access to applications and media that they have been granted access to. This is typically down through media and application rating levels. Profile support is something that Amazon does well with its Kindle Fire and is now becoming a standard feature for the basic Android 4.3 and later OS.
The next level of controls is restrictions. This is typically some form of settings within the tablet operating system that can lock out functions unless a password or pin is entered into the tablet. This can include the restriction of specific rated movies and TV or and be the restriction to a function such as in-app purchases. Anyone that has a tablet shared between family members will definitely want to take the time to set up these features which should be available in all of the tablet software at this point.

Apple Users Spent $10 Billion on Apps in 2013

Apple (AAPL) offered one of its periodic check-ins on activity in the App Store Tuesday, and announced that its users spent $10 billion last year in the App Store, with $1 billion coming in December alone.
This is a press release, not a U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission filing, and Apple seems to be consciously avoiding creation of a reliable measure of App Store performance. (Exactly a year ago, the company also released App Store numbers, but focused on total number of downloads.) The number is rounded and doesn’t include tax considerations. The main point is for people to say: “Wow, that’s a lot of money!”
 
And it is. If App Store revenues were the revenues of a publicly traded company, that company would rank No. 238, just between Public Service Enterprise Group(PEG), a public utility holding company, and Sherwin-Williams (SHW), the paint powerhouse. Here’s how it stacks up against companies selling other consumer products:

Another way to look at it: The total money spent on online advertising—the prize that has been driving much of the action in Silicon Valley for the last several years—was $102 billion in 2013. Ten App Store-sized businesses would match it.
The money doesn’t all accrue to Apple. Developers making the apps take home 70 percent of the revenue, and Apple likes to make a big deal out of how much money others can make in the App Store. The company says developers have made $15 billion to date.
Apple’s cut in 2013 was $3 billion, which puts it in the same neighborhood as the overall revenue of some notable tech companies, both those that sell software directly and those that rely on revenue from advertising. Salesforce.com (CRM) andAdobe (ADBE), for example, earned around $4 billion; Yahoo! (YHOO) earned closer to $5 billion.
What’s striking is that this money doesn’t mean much to Apple—it’s only about 1.5 percent of annual revenue. According to its latest regulatory filings, the company made $91 billion from iPhone sales in the 12 months ending in September. The App Store’s main purpose is just to drive those sales higher. Any money the company gets from it is gravy.

Tendencias en Tecnología al Comenzar el 2014*

Compartir con ustedes lo que uno ha venido escudriñando en la tecnología para comenzar un nuevo año es casi una obligación de lealtad para con los lectores. La llamada “tecnología” es algo que se ha venido apoderando de nuestras vidas y esto tiende a incrementarse anualmente, y a pasos agigantados. Empieza con el equipamiento de la casa y la oficina, se confunde con los objetos de uso personal y muchas veces termina exponiendo nuestras relaciones y pensamientos para los que manejan toda esa información, la llamada “metadata”, que no es otra cosa que esa colección paciente y sistemática de datos y su corelacionamiento para inferir más datos, que no sabíamos directamente pero ahora nos permite “imaginarlos, con bastante certeza” .    

El termómetro inicial del año es la Feria de Consumo (CES) que se celebra anualmente en enero en Las Vegas. Allí todo el mundo “destapa” lo que estaba cocinando y ese conjunto de presentaciones se convierte en la “metadata” que permite inferir ciertas tendencias.  A saber:

1.- La tendencia ofrecernos una tecnología “vestible” o “usable en el cuerpo” (como define el término “wearable” en Inglés). Una ropa llena de adminículos para medirnos los signos vitales mientras existimos a lo largo del tiempo, los relojes inter-conectados con los teléfonos y otras micro-computadoras, unos anteojos con sistemas de comunicación integrados para ir por la vida con el Maps, el  Google y los mensajes directamente en nuestros ojos; en fin, cosas que permiten al “smart phone” estar integrado con el usuario sin tener que sacarlo y operarlo. Y mantener a los usuarios generando “metadata” para los que la coleccionan… El tremendo salto de potencialidad  de micro-procesadores  súper-diminutos  y que casi no consumen energía para hacer lo inimaginable, correlacionado con la imaginación de cómo ponerlos a funcionar, hará esa tendencia cada vez más omni-presente.

2.- La liberalización de los empleados para utilizar crecientemente la tecnología que más les complace para trabajar, en sustitución del instrumento “estándar” de las compañías, va haciendo universal a las herramientas, convirtiendo crecientemente  en muy difícil dividir lo que es “de trabajo” con lo que es ”de consumo”, convirtiendo al individuo en un experto en la tecnología de aquellos instrumentos que prefiere y que lo utilizará en su vida personal, laboral, familiar y social para comunicarse, procesar información, almacenarla, trabajarla para inferir más información, la que necesita para completar su trabajo o sus metas personales.

3.- La presencia creciente de un nuevo “internet de las cosas” a través de la comunicación de objetos que generan comunicación entre ellos y permite a sus usuarios, cuando lo necesitan, intervenir en su funcionamiento. Refrigeradores que permanentemente están conectados comunicando todo lo imaginable y que puede permitir a su “dueño” cambiarle sus parámetros, ir a la tienda por leche antes de llegar a casa o cualquier cosa imaginable. Sistemas de vigilancia, control y acceso inter-accionando por internet con los propietarios-operadores para saber todo lo que requieren, activar o desactivar entradas, ver  y operar  cámaras de vigilancia,  correr o descorrer cortinas, manipular el aire acondicionado, en fin, todo lo que la imaginación permita. La riqueza de “metadata” potencial hace frotarse las manos a quienes la utilizan…

4.- La creciente utilización de un nuevo sistema de computación “contextual” y “predictivo” precisamente surgiendo de esa riqueza de metadata de todo tipo y la existencia de los elementos anteriores que permite “manipular” todo lo que nos rodea para evitar problemas imprevistos y para crear comodidad y control previsible, prever fenómenos de salud, evitar accidentes, y tener acceso controlado y seguro a los elementos vitales que condicionan la calidad de la vida.

La famosa “metadata” empoderada para “saltar” ante nuestra atención previniendo algo que puede ocurrir o corrigiendo algo que sucedió indebidamente… Una sociedad cada vez más “Googleada” individual, familiar, laboral y socialmente. Y por supuesto que muchos ven en esto la potencial malignidad de un “big brother” que puede ser benigno o maligno y otros ya prevén la necesidad de establecer ciertas reglas de ética, de uso adecuado, etc.

Pero lo cierto es que lo que era solo Ciencia Ficción se torna crecientemente en realidad.

Una Nueva Forma de StreetView de Google Maps: Para compartir tus fotos de Viaje (Condé Nast Traveler)

Google Maps's Street View feature has been around for a while, helping travelers navigate the world through mapping on-the-ground images of city streets, beaches, parks, and even airport terminals. And it's apparently only going to get better, thanks to a brand new feature that will allow travelers to create and share their own street views, with photographs taken from their mobile device or DSLR.

Using a new Google Maps feature, travelers can create, upload, and share 360 degree Photo Spheres of destinations they're currently visiting. See for example, these stunning, user-generated Photo Spheres of an Iranian mosque, the Machu Picchu under the midday sun, or sunrise over Mount Everest. Users can then upload their Photo Spheres into Google Maps's Views tool, allowing other travelers consulting Google Maps to see that destination through various "viewpoints."

According to Google, it's a way for people to showcase the diversity of a specific location—"by times of day, weather conditions or cultural events"—in a way that Google Street View didn't previously cover. Google hopes the new tool with enable people to better "share and witness the beauty and breadth of our planet." And judging from early Street Views, it's doing the job nicely.

That kid—the one in the back of the SUV with the iPad—is the automotive industry’s worst enemy. He’s also the reason some of the world’s biggest automakers are working with Google to bring its Android software into vehicle infotainment systems.

Early this morning, Google (GOOG) announced the Open Automotive Alliance. It’s a group of technology and automotive companies, including General Motors (GM), Honda Motor (HMC), Audi, Hyundai, and chipmaker Nvidia (NVDA), that want to customize Google’s popular mobile operating system for vehicles. The technology companies get a chance to place their wares into hundreds of millions of cars. Meanwhile, the automakers have an opportunity to modernize the software inside their vehicles and try to keep pace with the mobile devices that are starting to make high-profit infotainment systems obsolete.

The announcement comes the day before the official opening of the International Consumer Electronics Show held this week in Las Vegas, where the theme of car-as-gadget (also called “the connected car”) is expected to dominate. Volkswagen’s (VOW) Audi unit and GM are among the slate of auto companies at CES, which is promoting the growth of car-related exhibits.

Car companies have traditionally rejected the latest and greatest gizmos, preferring stable, proven technology. It’s a stance that makes sense given the safety and reliability concerns they face. The rise and rapid evolution of smartphones and tablets, however, has put a great deal of pressure on these automotive traditions. The mapping services that come free with smartphones have become a compelling alternative to pricey built-in navigation systems. Similarly, a parent might prefer to hand a child a tablet or phone loaded with movies, games, and apps rather than rely on a single DVD playing on backseat screens.

So far, carmakers have largely responded with custom in-car software systems. Ford Motor (F) and Microsoft (MSFT) collaborated on MyFord Touch, which ties cars to mobile devices and allows for things like voice commands. Other carmakers use the QNX software acquired by BlackBerry (BBRY), homegrown software, or variants of the Linux operating system. While the strategy helps car companies create products that differ from their rivals’, it also requires software companies to write different applications for each carmaker—a costly and time-consuming process.

There have already been attempts to solve this problem through partnerships. In 2009, BMW, GM, Intel (INTC), and others, for example, announced the Genivi Alliance, a stab at collaborating around the Linux operating system and supporting software that has had modest results. (Genivi is sponsoring a panel at CES called, alarmingly, “Collaborate or Die” (PDF).)

Android, a variant of Linux, has an advantage over other software because of its dominance in the mobile device industry. The electronics and computing supply chain throughout Asia, Europe, and the U.S. tends to test and tune new components first for Android, providing intense interest and deep expertise around the software. For the automakers, this could translate into access to newer, better technology and lower costs for testing equipment. App makers are also used to creating software for Android. In addition, the likes of BMW, Kia, Audi, and Toyota Motor (TM) already use Google technology for search, maps, and other functions.

Tesla Motors (TSLA) is among the cutting-edge automakers that have popularized the notion of a computer on wheels as the next evolution of the car. The company’s all-electric Model S sedan ships with a 17-inch touch screen and ready access to things like streaming radio. With a few finger swipes, you can split the screen to have a massive top section for Google Maps and a lower section for music.

Elsewhere in Silicon Valley, new companies like CloudCar are working to bridge the technology and automotive realms. The company has built a small computing device that can be plugged into a car to give it a modern infotainment system. The idea is that automakers could then upgrade the small unit as needed to bring new features to their vehicles. In addition, software makers would have a common device to aim at with their applications. Ford has also set up a research center in Palo Alto and open-sourced some of the innards of its cars’ control software to let people create things like custom speedometers.

As two titans of the television industry, Sony (SNE) and Panasonic (6752:JP), end a joint venture to develop better manufacturing techniques for organic light-emitting diode displays, is it time to say R.I.P to OLED?

The arrival of OLED TV, a technology experts view as a superior performer, has been a years-in-the-making proposition hampered by thorny cost and reliability issues. Now it appears to have been superseded by a high-priced alternative. TV manufacturers have moved to Ultra HD displays based on older, liquid-crystal technology that offer four times the resolution of current high-definition screens. While there’s almost nothing to watch in Ultra HD format, the industry expects sales growth in 2014. Samsung (005930:KS) said today it has begun taking orders for a 110-inch Ultra HD model that will sell in South Korea, China, Europe, and the Middle East. The price tag in South Korea: about $150,000.

Samsung and LG (066570:KS) each have 55-inch OLED models on the market, although the category has remained a niche in consumer electronics because it’s expensive. And the new technology offers several advantages. An OLED display boasts no backlighting, which means that a black image on the screen is pure black, instead of merely a dark gray of varying intensity. The technology offers a higher contrast ratio—images “pop” from the screen and colors appear deeper. An OLED TV can also be made far thinner than liquid-crystal and plasma displays. “OLED is the true successor in picture quality to plasma,” Gary Merson, the editor of HDGuru.com, told me earlier this year. “The only issue is we don’t know how long it’s going to take for the cost to go down and be competitive.”

Those costs—$8,000 and higher for current models—speak to how OLED has proved to be a technical nightmare for television makers. The primary goal of the Sony-Panasonic partnership, which started in June 2012 and ends on De. 31, was to figure out how to make the technology cost effective; the companies were unable to figure out manufacturing efficiencies or to make the displays more durable, as Nikkei News reported last week.

Panasonic and Sony both had planned to release OLED televisions in early 2014, and it’s unclear whether the dissolution of their research venture will alter those plans. “From now on, each company will independently continue development of OLED, utilizing the results of their joint collaboration,” Panasonic spokesman Jim Reilly said in an e-mail, declining to comment on the company’s future plans for OLED sets. A Sony spokesman told Bloomberg News that the company would continue its OLED research.

Sony introduced the first OLED television seven years ago, an 11-inch model that demonstrated the technology’s many virtues. Four years passed before Sony presented additional OLED displays, and those were not for the consumer market. Panasonic and Sony both showed large OLED displays last January at the Consumer Electronics Show. A press release Sony issued at the time focuses on myriad technical hurdles that almost never make their way into publicity materials aimed at consumers.

If the technical and cost issues can be tamed, however, future TV buyers are likely to watch large, ultra-high-resolution displays that leapfrog what has been possible with current televisions. OLED displays, says Rob Sabin, editor of Sound & Vision magazine, are “sort of a cure-all that brings everything to the table.” Unfortunately, it also seems to bring a cripplingly hefty price tag.
